New Travel Insurance Requirements for Visitors to Cuba

The Cuban government recently announced new travel insurance requirements for tourists visiting Cuba. According to the decision, which becomes effective on May 1, 2010, travel medical insurance policies purchased abroad must be from travel insurance and/or assistance companies recognized by the Cuban government.

Visitors who cannot present proof of travel insurance from a recognized company will be required to purchase medical insurance provided by the Cuban government at point of entry into the country.

In consideration of these requirements, Mondial Assistance Canada has been confirmed as a recognized travel assistance company by the Cuban government.

In order to confirm coverage through Mondial Assistance Canada, we ask that all customers who have purchased a travel medical insurance policy from Mondial Assistance Canada through this website bring the following documents with them when travelling to Cuba:

1.       Proof of insurance: This can be a copy of your Declaration Page which you received from Mondial Assistance Canada via email or mail as part of your initial confirmation of insurance and fulfillment package. Please also bring a copy a copy of your Certificate of Insurance for the coverage you purchased.

2.       Proof of a contractual relationship with Assistur: Please download and bring a copy of the letter available at the link below to meet this requirement. It mentions Mondial Assistance Canada as a recognized travel assistance carrier, while referencing our long-standing contractual relationship with Assistur, Cuba’s largest travel assistance company.

These two items together should be sufficient to allow entry into Cuba without having to purchase any additional insurance. Please note that the secondary letter assumes coverage of the customer holding this documentation. It will be the responsibility of the customer to ensure that their coverage is in effect, so please be sure to review your Declaration Page to verify all information related to your travel insurance plan, including coverage effective dates, are correct.

As we are made aware of any further information or changes communicated by the Cuban government, we will update our customers accordingly through this site.
